Nearly 700 layoffs added in March

An estimate of layoffs resulting from merging Honolulu’s leading papers, Gannett’s Honolulu Advertiser and Oahu Publications’ Honolulu Star-Bulletin, forced layoff numbers to increase drastically in March. More than 600 employees will be laid off if the papers merge. The layoff total stands at 1,726, 695 more layoffs than were recorded at the end of February.

Five newspapers closures were added in March; none was a daily paper.
