An unknown number of employees were laid off, and three publications will be eliminated: Coastal Senior, West Chatham Neighbor and Apartment Finder. “For the past several weeks, we have been examining all aspects of our operation and product portfolio,” Publisher Michael C. Traynor said in a story on the Morning News website. “It is clear we must accelerate our progress toward the digital future by growing audience and sales while making our legacy infrastructure more efficient.” Traynor said laid off employees were offered a severance package, but did not say how many employees were affected.

The paper notified the union on Aug. 26, 2011, that four editorial assistants and two to four photographers would be laid off. Photo editor Larry C. Price resigned on Aug. 29 instead of cutting photographers. “I do not believe the layoffs are fair to you as individuals or that they are in the best interest of the Dayton Daily News and our readers,” Price wrote in a memo to his staff. “If these cuts are enacted, it will be impossible to meet the Cox initiatives for covering breaking news, sharing content with our media partners and growing our online presence.” Layoffs still are expected.
