The sports editor was laid off. “We’re going to try to absorb the duties as well as we can,” editor/publisher Dave Perry told the Tucson Weekly. “Several of us, including myself, have sportswriting experience. We have someone who’s working on a freelance basis.”

Perry said the paper has “absorbed two more positions” — it is unclear if the second “absorbed” position was a layoff or an open position that was eliminated. Do you know? Leave a comment or send me an email: newspaperlayoffs@gmail.com. Emailed tips are anonymous.

The Spanish-language papers closed in 2008. Once a four-newspaper chain of dailies, Rumbo had more than 100 employees at its peak. In four years, the paper suffered four rounds of layoffs, and switched from a daily to a three-times-a-week tabloid, then a weekly. Rumbo de Austin was the first to close in 2006. Rumbo de Houston is the only survivor.
