Printing was outsourced to the Providence Journal. Day Publisher Gary Farrugia said the move would result in “significant efficiencies and cost savings,” and layoffs. The Day has 151 full- and part-time pre-press, press, mailroom and circulation employees, but Farrugia said the number of employees who would be laid off had not been determined, pending “details of the final agreement” with the Journal. Weekly papers owned by Day Publishing will continue to be published in New London. “I recognize and deeply regret the hardship this announcement will place on the good employees who will be affected by job loss,” Farrugia said in a story on the paper’s website. “This is not a move we entered into lightly. Rather, it represents a strategic pivot for the entire company.”

Update: Thirty-eight employees were laid off when printing was outsourced to the Providence Journal. Most of those laid off worked in the printing division; Editor Gary Farrugia said other divisions were affected, including the newsroom where two employees were laid off. “I don’t think people realize how much business was hurt by the weather,” Farrugia said. “We’ve gotten a good financial bump” from outsourcing printing, he said. Five newsroom, seven “operations,” two finance, and six advertising and marketing employees were laid off. “It’s really driven by the ongoing economic downturn as well as our desire to position the Times to compete in tomorrow’s information marketplace,” Times spokeswoman Jill Mackie told The Stranger. “So, as a part of that, we’re reducing costs and part of that is a limited number of targeted layoffs. These layoffs are designed to minimize the impact on our ability to provide outstanding journalism to the community.”
