The paper will stop printing a daily edition, publishing only Wednesday, Friday and Sunday starting in the fall. More than 200 employees were laid off; employees were notified on June 12, and their last day will be Sept. 30. Those not laid off were offered new jobs. “This is a painful day for many of us at the newspaper,” editor Jim Amoss said June 12 in a statement. “But our goal is to serve our community well into the future. That means moving aggressively into the digital world while maintaining a substantial print presence. We have a well thought-out plan.”

Copy editing has been consolidated; 10 to 12 copy editors were laid off. In a staff memo, Executive Editor Dave Butler called the change a cost-saving move that mimics a similar move at the Denver Post. “Our idea, like Denver’s, is to put more responsibility for copy editing on the editor doing the initial story read — especially on routine stories,” he wrote in the memo. “A second or third edit on most stories has become a luxury most newspapers no longer can afford.”

In April, Tribune Co. announced it would use Journatic, a Chicago-based “media content provider,” for its hyperlocal news reporting, laying off most of its TribLocal employees. Initial reports said about 40 employees would be laid off. A Tribune spokesman later told Romenesko that was incorrect: “The number you have is a little off. At the end of the day, about half of the people covering hyperlocal news will lose their jobs (20 or so), and not all of them are reporters — some reporters are actually being reassigned at Chicago Tribune.”

In June, a story by This American Life revealed Journatic was using fake bylines on stories. Officials at the Chicago Tribune announced in July that they would suspend its use of Journatic.

“About 15″ newsroom employees were laid off, according to a story on the Tribune’s website. The story says most of those laid off were editors and managers. Spokesman Gary Weitman declined to comment on the layoffs: “The Chicago Tribune does not publicly discuss internal personnel matters. Like most companies, the Tribune make decisions about staff skills and composition based on customer needs and business conditions.”
