Thirteen full-time and eight part-time employees were laid off from the NPG Printing, which prints the News-Press and other publications in the area. Chief operating officer Lee Sawyer blamed lost contracts and a printing deal that fell apart during negotiations. Sawyer said most layoffs will be from the newspaper printing operation.

Design and editing are being outsourced to a GateHouse design hub. “Up to 10″ employees will be laid off. Designers and copy editors can apply for, but are not guaranteed, a position in the design hub.
“We believe this decision will help us be more competitive, provide more unique content online and develop rich enterprise storytelling,” said David Arkin, vice president of content and audience for GateHouse, in a story on the Register Star’s website. One hub will be in Rockford; the other will be in Massachusetts.

In January, about a week after employees were told of the design and editing hub, an assistant editorial page editor who opposed the layoffs was laid off.
