Thirty-three employees were laid off, including four from the newsroom. “As you may know, I got laid off yesterday along with 32 others,” columnist Michael Silence wrote in his last blog post for the paper. “That sucks, but it is the reality of our business. I will miss my colleagues, a great bunch of people who I got to hang around with for 29 years and 11 months.”

Copy editing and page design will be outsourced and consolidated at the The Caller-Times in Corpus Christi, Texas. According to Steve Greenberg: “At least 15 copy editors and page designers (some people do both jobs) dealing with news, features, business and sports will see their positions eliminated, along with the news wire editor. Supposedly they can apply for jobs in Corpus Christi … but then, that means living in Corpus Christi.” Greenberg did not note a date for the switch to Texas.

The Memphis Newspaper Guild received a notice that the paper will cut an unknown number of editorial jobs. The notice also said the physical size of the paper will be cut.
