“As many as 20″ employees were laid off, LA Observed reported. The Wrap confirmed that 12 to 20 employees were laid off, but The Times would not confirm a specific number. The alt-weekly published by the Los Angeles Times has closed. Six employees are listed in the paper’s masthead; a company memo said employees would “transition into similiar roles elsewhere in the company.”

The paper’s Orange County printing plant will close; 80 pressmen will be laid off. To accommodate earlier deadlines, the paper will add LATExtra, a late-breaking news section, Monday through Saturday. The Times also will shrink to a 44-inch web width (from the current 48-inch width).

Update: In the comments, Ed Padgett clarified where those layoffs will be made: 39 press operators and 41 employees from related departments (mailers, machinists, plate makers, etc.) will be laid off when the plant closes. (01.09.10)
