The 3-year-old weekly paper has closed. “While the Blue Springs Journal doesn’t have nearly the tenure of other area newspapers, our mission and goals are the same — to accurately report on news at the community level,” Publisher John Beaudoin wrote in a note on the paper’s website. “I believe the Journal did just that.

“Our economy and evolving industry have forced us to become slimmer from a cost standpoint and more critical when evaluating business models that work. The Blue Springs Journal is a victim of the latter.”

The weekly paper, which was founded in 1892, has closed. “I am sure many of you know of and have experienced firsthand the financial hardships that have come crashing down on all of us over the last few years,” Publisher John Beaudoin wrote in a note published on the paper’s website. “Companies are tightening their belts, layoffs are rampant and industries with as much history as our towns themselves are forced to transform with the times. Design and copy editing are being outsourced to The Charlotte Observer in Charlotte, N.C. A story on the News & Observer’s website says “all 25 N&O positions are being moved,” and current designers and copy editors will “have the opportunity to relocate.”

“Given the new economic realities of our industry, we must find more efficient ways to deliver the very best products to our readers and advertisers, and we are confident the new center will be an important part of our future,” publisher Orage Quarles III was quoted in the story.

Six advertising and circulation employees were laid off or moved from full-time to part-time. Open positions also were eliminated. Employees (except advertising salespeople) will be required to take a one-week unpaid furlough in the first quarter of the fiscal year, as well. In a story on the paper’s website, publisher Timothy M. Kelley said the paper’s revenue was down. “As a result, we need to implement additional cost-saving measures to achieve our business goals.”
