Printing was outsourced to the Florida Times-Union. At the time, Publisher Derek May said jobs would be lost, but did not say how many. “This will create a few jobs, and there are a few people the Times-Union is going to need,” May said in a story on the Record’s website. “There will be a net job reduction, but because of various factors I can’t say exactly how many. Decisions to eliminate jobs are extremely difficult to make.” Do you know more? Leave a comment or send me an email: newspaperlayoffs@gmail.com. Emailed tips are anonymous.

Printing and some post-press operations were outsourced to the Kansas City Star. “Our industry is changing rapidly,” Capital-Journal Publisher Gregg Ireland said in a story on the paper’s website. “This move is historic and, in some ways, very difficult. This move is in no way a move away from the printed product, which remains a large and extremely important part of what we do. But it is a move away from printing. We’re not in the printing business. We’re in the information business.” Kansas City is 65 miles from Topeka. The paper reports “as many as 34″ employees will be laid off.

Traynor said in a story on the Morning News website. “It is clear we must accelerate our progress toward the digital future by growing audience and sales while making our legacy infrastructure more efficient.” Traynor said laid off employees were offered a severance package, but did not say how many employees were affected.
