Twenty-three production, IT and marketing employees were laid off. Managers gave no reason for the layoffs, and did not issue a company memo as they have with previous layoffs. An additional five newsroom employees accepted buyout offers: three copy editors, one designer and one reporter. The paper did not report the buyouts in its story about the layoffs.

Printing will be outsourced to The Times in Shreveport, La.; 12 full-time and 15 part-time employees will be laid off. A story on the Times’ website said new positions will be added in Shreveport. Gannett Blog reports that as of December 2010, 68 percent of Gannett’s 82 U.S. newspapers had moved printing off-site.

Willamette Week reports as many as 38 employees were laid off. In a statement sent to the weekly paper, Oregonian publisher N. Christian Anderson III said newsroom positions were not cut: “We did eliminate some positions in our company today. They were in production, circulation, finance and advertising support. They are part of our continuing effort to find efficiencies in our operations as we strengthen our financial performance.” Anderson would not confirm how many employees were laid off.
