Six advertising and circulation employees were laid off or moved from full-time to part-time. Open positions also were eliminated. Employees (except advertising salespeople) will be required to take a one-week unpaid furlough in the first quarter of the fiscal year, as well. In a story on the paper’s website, publisher Timothy M. Kelley said the paper’s revenue was down. “As a result, we need to implement additional cost-saving measures to achieve our business goals.”

The managing editor and features editor were laid off. “My position was ‘absorbed,’ I was told,” former managing editor Ty Bowers told the Tucson Weekly. Bowers started at the weekly paper in May 2006; Thirteenth Street Media bought it in December 2007. “We had an editor, myself, a Marana reporter, a photographer — eight people at the newspaper (on the editorial side). Now it’s down to two, plus the editor/publisher,” Bowers said.

The sports editor was laid off. “We’re going to try to absorb the duties as well as we can,” editor/publisher Dave Perry told the Tucson Weekly. “Several of us, including myself, have sportswriting experience. We have someone who’s working on a freelance basis.”
