“About 20″ employees were laid off. “Although our declines are not as steep as they have been in previous years, revenue trends remain negative year-over-year,” publisher Orage Quarles III wrote in a memo to employees. “As a result, we must continue to look for ways to offset this trend by managing expenses.” This is the paper’s second round of layoffs in 2011.

Buyouts are being offered to 167 employees — about a quarter of the paper’s workforce. The American Independent reports that Statesman managers expect about 20 percent of those buyout offers to be accepted.

Update: Twelve newsroom employees and 21 employees from other departments accepted the buyout offer. In a column, editor Fred Zipp said the newsroom employees who left “do so knowing they helped the Statesman make a quantum leap forward in quality.”

“It’s impossible, however, to endure the loss of 12 such accomplished colleagues without ill effect. They have made enormous contributions to the success of the Statesman,” Zipp wrote. (07.14.11)
