The Times-Picayune, Huntsville Times and Birmingham News are making similar production and staffing changes.

More than 200 employees were laid off; employees were notified on June 12, and their last day will be Sept. 30. Those not laid off were offered new jobs. “This is a painful day for many of us at the newspaper,” editor Jim Amoss said June 12 in a statement. “But our goal is to serve our community well into the future. That means moving aggressively into the digital world while maintaining a substantial print presence. We have a well thought-out plan.”

Copy editing has been consolidated; 10 to 12 copy editors were laid off. In a staff memo, Executive Editor Dave Butler called the change a cost-saving move that mimics a similar move at the Denver Post. “Our idea, like Denver’s, is to put more responsibility for copy editing on the editor doing the initial story read — especially on routine stories,” he wrote in the memo. “A second or third edit on most stories has become a luxury most newspapers no longer can afford.”
