Design and copy editing for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Austin American-Statesman, Dayton Daily News and Palm Beach Post will be consolidated in Florida and Ohio. The wire desk for the four papers will be consolidated in Atlanta. “Over the past year, we asked our four major newspapers to identify best practices and opportunities to consolidate business functions — without compromising the investigative and in-depth news our audiences demand,” a statement from Cox Media Group said. The statement said these changes will be made over the next 18 months.

Correction: A previous version neglected to point out that design and copy editing would be consolidated to two papers: The Palm Beach Post and the Dayton Daily News. This post has been corrected. (11.04.11)

The paper notified the union on Aug. 26, 2011, that four editorial assistants and two to four photographers would be laid off. Photo editor Larry C. Price resigned on Aug. 29 instead of cutting photographers. “I do not believe the layoffs are fair to you as individuals or that they are in the best interest of the Dayton Daily News and our readers,” Price wrote in a memo to his staff. “If these cuts are enacted, it will be impossible to meet the Cox initiatives for covering breaking news, sharing content with our media partners and growing our online presence.” Layoffs still are expected.

The weekly paper has closed. “After publishing a newspaper for the community of Sylvania for over 120 years, the Sylvania Herald has been forced to close,” a note on the paper’s website says. “We would like to thank our advertisers and of course our thousands of readers for your loyal support over the years. This will be the final edition of the newspaper. A decision like this is not reached lightly and we have put much thought and emotion into reaching this conclusion. The cost of printing and distributing 12,500 newspapers weekly has simply become more than our ad revenue can support.” Murray Cohen, president of Delphos Herald Inc., was the paper’s only full-time employee; it had four part-time employees.
