After 21 full-time union employees accepted a buyout offer, four more full-time and 15 part-time union employees were laid off. Five nonunion employees also were laid off. The parent company had offered buyouts, saying it wanted to cut 37 newsroom positions by March 31 in an effort to create one newsroom for its properties. There were three newsrooms: The Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com. In a statement, Philadelphia Media Holdings said the newsroom cuts were a response to “the unfortunate economic conditions that continue to impact” the industry. “We believe that one employee receiving a layoff notification is too many and regret having to make such a difficult decision relative to the future of any PMN employee.” PMN spokesman Mark Block called the cuts “very prevalent in the industry at the moment.”
