The “equivalent of 10 positions” were eliminated. It is not clear if 10 employees were laid off, more than 10 full- and part-time employees employees were laid off, or vacant positions were eliminated with a smaller number of layoffs. Remaining employees must take five unpaid days off by Dec. 23. “The economic recovery continues at a slower-than-hoped-for pace, and revenues remain negative year-over-year,” Herald-Leader President and Publisher Rufus M. Friday wrote in a letter to the staff. “Although we’ve all been working hard to improve the revenue picture and to avoid expense cuts that impact our employees, we’ve decided additional reductions in the workforce and a second-half furlough are necessary.”

The 30-year-old weekly paper has closed. A note on the paper’s website blamed “decreasing advertising revenues, adversarial lawsuits directed at the paper by the Gannett Corp. … and an overall sour economy.” “The newspaper’s editorial and advertising staffs as well as the community-based owners of the Voice have been fighting for months to keep the paper alive and are still actively pursuing a solution that will allow the paper to survive,” said Editor and Publisher George Lurie. Lurie did not say how many employees the paper had. Do you know more? Leave a comment or send me an email: newspaperlayoffs@gmail.com. Emailed tips are anonymous.
