“About 130″ employees will be laid off by the end of the year; publisher Dave Hunke did not specify which departments would be effected. In an interview with the Associated Press, Hunke called the layoffs and changes to management structure “pretty radical.” “This gets us ready for our next quarter century,” he said.

Design and copy editing at the Tampa Tribune, Richmond Times-Dispatch and Winston-Salem Journal will be consolidated in two groups, according to a memo from Media General. “Our consolidated editing and design operations allow our newsrooms to focus on strong local news reporting,” said Donna Reed, Media General’s vice president of content. “Stories will be edited once rather than multiple times, and we can take advantage of economies of scale and centralization of top talent.”

In a move that publisher Digby Solomon said could save the paper $1 million a year, the Daily Press will outsource copy editing and design to the Chicago Tribune. “Nobody enjoys telling people that they don’t have a job,” Solomon said in a story on the Daily Press website. “That’s the nasty part of it. But if we want to provide jobs for a majority of people and if we want to keep newspapers alive, we’re going to have to be creative about this.” Solomon said he did not know how many employees would be laid off, but estimated it would be more than 10 percent of the paper’s 84 newsroom employees.
